Dressing Room - for sky & boat : We got a sneak peek at the Spring 2009 collection by Portland-based designer sky & boat, featuring really cute, wearable, and sustainable fashions made from organic fibers and hand-dyed. One of the things that’s great about Portland is the strength of the sustainable fashion movement here in town, so we’re always excited to support it!

The overall feel we went for was clean, fresh, and “naked,” as the designer put it. We also played with the idea of having our model act like she was in her bedroom, trying on different outfits and checking herself in the mirror, with the pile of clothes on the floor growing over the course of the shoot. Basically, a catalog shoot with a twist!

These are just a few of the many, many outfits we shot that day. Everything looked great, and the fit was wonderfully flattering.

Runaways - for Revivall Clothing : Working on this shoot was a kick! When I first heard from Laura Lee, she already knew that she wanted to do a fashion set that tells a story, so we were tossing around ideas with each other for weeks. When the shoot date finally arrived, we brought our resources together, and shot a story of three girls who ran away from their rich, high-profile lives, to hide out in the not-so-glamorous corners of town.

The whole team did a fantastic job, and we ended up with some very cool shots that showcased the richly detailed designs. Laura, in particular, brought a really wonderful energy to the set, and her enthusiasm for the creative process really comes through, not just in the photos, but in all of the clothes she makes. It'll be great working with her again in the future!

Black and White (and Green All Over) : This was a creative project based around a theme of black-and-white clothing, and it was a great opportunity to work with some of my favorite people. Put all of that together with one of our favorite locations, and you have a pretty awesome shoot!

Melody has an amazing way of taking seemingly-random pieces of clothing, and whipping them together into unique outfits, and Amy and Rachel make a great team for creative, avant-garde makeup. Keagan was new to us all, but she rose to the challenge and worked every look we gave her.

Sweetz Clothing Spring '08 : We had a great opportunity to work with the awesome team at Sweetz Clothing, which creates made-to-order, custom-fit garments with a retro flair. This shoot turned into sort of a "catalog shoot on steroids," thanks to a unique outdoor location and modern pinup styling. Throw in some classic cars and a radio DJ, and you have plenty of opportunity to get rad shots!

We went for lighting that a played up the bold colors of the Spring 2008 line, and we also got a sneak peek at the designs they were working on next: a goth-influenced line featuring dark, rich brocades, satins, and laces! We can't wait to shoot more of their new pieces, too.

Retro Flood - for Erika Hendrix : This shoot was one of those happy surprises. Erika had sent me several tops to shoot, and gave me full creative license with how to shoot them, so my original plan was to shoot it outdoors. Unfortunately, the only thing you can count on with Oregon weather is that you can NEVER count on it!

Fortunately, I'd pulled together a truly amazing team for this shoot, so we all got together in the studio and put our creative skills to task. I worked my lighting magic during hair and makeup, and we ended up with some wonderful images with an awesomely-80's flavor. The response to these shots has been fantastic, too, and it's earned us a number of features and print credits.

You can read more about this shoot at our photo blog. Enjoy the photos!

Plus-Size Fashion : As much as I enjoy “straight-size” fashion, I’ve always had a soft spot for plus-size models. As a normal-sized woman who’d be considered “plus-size” by the fashion industry (plus models sometimes run as small as a US Size 8, when the average woman is Size 12!) I’ve always felt that there’s much more to beauty than what your average magazine likes to portray. There’s health, vitality, and beauty in all shapes and sizes, if you open yourself to it.

So, when I found Christine’s just-started online portfolio back in January, I was excited to set up a shoot with her. She had the striking face and gorgeous proportions that I felt really exemplified plus-size beauty, so I wanted to get it out there as much as I could!

And now, 7 months after shooting with her, I’m happy to congratulate her on her first published credit as a model! Christine was selected by PLUS Model Magazine to tell the world What She Loves About Her Curves in the new September issue, so readers across the country will be seeing her face, and hopefully taking a cue from her curvy-and-proud outlook! The magazine also chose to use a photo from the shoot I did with her. I brought this team together with the hopes of pushing the boundaries and presenting a look not often seen in plus-size fashion, and it looks like we succeeded!

Nerd Harrassment Theme : This was an idea that hit me after seeing a few too many schoolgirl-themed photos. I thought it'd be fun to play with the classic image of the high school nerd, and I wound up expanding on it by showing some of the typical tortures they suffer at the hands of their classmates. None of this stuff ever happened to me when I was growing up, but as something of a nerd myself, I couldn't help but sympathize at least a little.

I expected the biggest challenge to be finding enough models who were willing to get a little messy for the cause! Fortunately, some great ladies volunteered to do everything from soaking their head "swirly-style" to being duct-taped to a goalpost. It was great working with people who were ready to commit to the shot, and it turned into a fun project with hilarious results.

This was also the first black-and-white project I'd done since college, so it was nice to return to my roots. They were shot in color, but the final product just seemed right in black-and-white.
